Nanyang Institute has been founded in the background of Zhejiang Province trying to connect with Shanghai, assimilating into Yangtse river
delta, and taking the initiative to share the quality higher education resources of Shanghai.

In 1999, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Jiaxing leadership signed the agreement on cooperation in running schools, starting the
construction of Jiaxing Nanyang Polytechnic Institute.

On May 18, 2002, Jiaxing Nanyang Polytechnic Institute held the unveiling ceremony.

On September 10, 2004, the people's government of Zhejiang Province authorized the official foundation of the Institute, which was
inaugurated on the very day, with the then president of Shanghai Jiao Tong University Xie Shengwu and the then Jiaxing' mayor Chen
Derong hosting the ceremony.

On July 3, 2009, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the Jiaxing government signed an agreement to conduct comprehensive cooperation.
Both sides would work together to raise the educational level of Jiaxing Nanyang Polytechnic Institute and construct a new campus in
Xiuzhou District of Jiaxing City.

On December 4, 2012, the construction of the new campus was officially launched and was formally put into use in 2016.
